Xbox的Netflix for TV Game?

我係一位Xbox One的機主,而我對Microsoft的一個新項目相當有興趣,就係快將推出的Xbox Game Pass

所謂嘅Xbox Game Pass,就係只要玩家支付一個月費(應該是9.9美元一個月),就可以係月內玩盡Microsoft提供的一個Xbox遊戲庫內全部遊戲。簡單講,就係一個Xbox遊戲版本嘅Netflix。

有評論認為呢個策略係唔會成功的,其中Business Insider嘅Ben Gilbert 就指出一個相當明顯嘅問題 — Xbox Game Pass只有先花大約2000蚊買左一部Xbox One嘅朋友先可以用到,同Netflix、Hulu同埋Amazon Prime Video等服務完全唔同嘅係呢個遊戲庫不單唔可以係第二個平台上面使用,更加唔可以拎出街隨時隨地玩,相對嘅吸引力低好多。

We’re in a golden age of television, and it’s largely due to the massive popularity of subscription services like Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, and HBO. Without Netflix, we might never have seen shows like “Stranger Things,” “House of Cards,” or “Orange is the New Black.”

不過,Xbox嘅主管Phil Spencer就在The Guardian嘅訪問講左一個幾好的理由,解釋Microsoft開發呢個服務對遊戲業界嘅好處。現時遊戲業最易賺錢嘅模式,係先向玩家出售基本版的遊戲,再向玩家定期出售配件道具或是所謂的Downloadable Content(DLC),藉以長賺長有。近年一個較成功嘅例子係FIFA Ultimate Team,在遊戲入面嘅商鋪向玩家出售遊戲貨幣及球員,從而收到穩定嘅金收入。

Something big has happened to the video game industry over the last five years – you may have noticed. All the old rules about consoles – the fact that they enjoyed five-to-eight-year life cycles, the fact that games “just worked” out of the box – they’re all gone.

Spencer指,呢個模式並唔適合用於故事性較強的遊戲,特別一些直綫故事遊戲,例如蝙蝠俠Arkham系列,DLC內容吸引力相對較低;最近公佈的Star Wars Battlefront II,亦公佈不會採用DLC的模式。

Spencer認為採用月費方式來支持遊戲開發的話,理論上可以容許開發商取得持續穩定的收入,亦因此有更大的誘因以類似Teltale Game的方式,將一個長綫故事分成多集,隔月推出,令玩家願意長期支付月費去玩呢類分集遊戲。如果呢個情況成真嘅話,情況就真係好似用Netflix睇劇咁,玩家可以一季一季咁打啲故事遊戲。
